Penelope

A few weeks ago, well, I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but I went to work and left early and came home with a 9-month-old puppy. She's adorable. A Shih Tzu / terrier mix with an absolutely fabulous under bite.




Here's Penelope. She's happy and trainable and so far a great family companion.

This doesn't mean I haven't been knitting, it just means I've been crazy. I made a few headbands: A turban for my daughter and another one for me.

Here are the headbands.... adorable kid 1 is my model.





I've also bought a good amount of yarn in anticipation of some great knitting adventures in the coming months (wait, wasn't there a resolution about this? Shit). I have sweaters to knit! Ideas and more ideas for knitting projects! Just not quite enough time, ever, to complete them. I need to knit through some of the yarn I've accumulated though. (feeling shame)

So, here is a pair of toast mitts. I love them and just need to perfect a bind off with a little more stretch the next time around.


I'm still working on "the shrug." I think I just really need to finish it and move on. I'm tiring of the whole project and I picked up the stitches wrong but don't care enough to try again - maybe I'll give it another go in a few weeks. I'm working on my first pair of mittens that I hope will be a gateway mitten to many many more mittens (with thumb holes and everything) for the whole family.

Oh, and I don't think I ever posted these fun things....




I hope to have something more substantial to share next time around. But, with a puppy comes lots of walking and playing and not really enough time for much else.

I remember back in 2005 or 2006 when I attended a writing workshop at Northwestern University, where I had just graduated with my MA in fiction writing, and talk about blogging was all the rage - And I had no idea what blogging was! Fast forward 10-12 years and blogging is now almost a thing of the past. Granted, I don't have any readers, but it kind of bothers me that this little space on the Internet is almost gone because people can't be bothered to read anymore. Holy Shit. I seem to have knit a sweater!

It's true. I seem to have finished my first garment. I started it, oh, I can't even remember when... I should have recorded the date, but I didn't. I know that I was at least working on it in April of 2014, and it is September 2014 now. And, I did it. I finished. Yes, it has a few mistakes and a couple areas of questionable stitch integrity, but it's complete! I mean, your first sweater isn't supposed to be perfect - right? Otherwise it wouldn't be your first sweater. Kind of like first loves - they call them "firsts" for a reason. You learn and make better decisions the next time around. This is the Lion Brand "my first sweater" pattern and I utilized the online class by Amy Ross. The class was OK. It was good to have visuals, but I've taken better online classes. But, cheers to Amy. I blame it all on my wisdom teeth

I've been knitting, I swear. I just have nothing to show for it. Socks are not a quick thing for me and I signed up for a sock knit-along. I was about half way through my first sock when I ran into trouble... two people mentioned that sock #1 (started without a gauge swatch, of course) looked small, and it was. WAY too small. Rrrrrrriiiiiiippp. So, I started it again. And, starting a sock for the second time is never really a "fun thing". But, here I am. And my sweater is also coming along very slowly but surely. I'm practicing a new technique, so it's taking its sweet time. I'm so tired. The winter makes me tired and sore. Everything wrong in my life gets worse in the winter. It's just the truth. I'm going to try some yoga tonight. I get terrible TMJ when I'm either cold or stressed out, and right now I'm a little bit of both.
